Windows XP End of Life…It’s Coming

Windows XP End of Life…It’s Coming

If you haven’t already heard, something big is happening…….. As of April 8, 2014, Windows XP will no longer be a supported platform. What does this mean? Microsoft will no longer create security patches or software updates for the XP Operating System and there will no longer be any form of technical support for either XP of Office 2003.

How will “End of Support” affect my business? Having non-supported software in the environment introduces you to these 4 potential risks:

1. Security & Compliance Risks
Unsupported and unpatched devices are vulnerable to security risks and cyber-attacks. Without critical updates, your PC will be much more vulnerable to outside security threats. These attacks not only cause, downtime but can also put confidential information and your own business data at risk. A data breach could lead to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.

2. Software Issues
Most software and hardware vendors will no longer support products that are running on Windows XP, as they are unable to get Windows XP and Office 2003 updates. This means that when you are stuck in a pickle, there won’t be any tech support available to troubleshoot.

3. Inability to Upgrade
Having a large number of Windows XP devices could impact your ability to leverage the latest software and tools.  For instance Office 365 and Office 2013 require that the client OS be Windows 7 or later. This means that your other software and applications will be affected by this 12 year old platform as well.

4. Downtime
The risks of system failure and business disruption could increase because of the End of support, lack of supported software, and aging hardware running Windows XP. Even a system running an updated anti-virus or modern browser is not safe from potential issues that may cause downtime.
